Factors limiting kererū (Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae) populations across New Zealand

چکیده

Kererū declined rapidly following European settlement in New Zealand, and they remain at a reduced density. We assessed three sources of information to test the hypothesis that predation by introduced mammals abundance food resources are two major factors determining kererū across Zealand. First, we reviewed literature on affecting vital rates kererū. This analysis showed is cause most nest failures deaths Second, examined data from database bird sanctuary outcomes Zealand evaluate long-term responses intensive pest control local scales. detections did not always increase predator control, which suggests supply or forest area may be more important limiting some sanctuaries. Third, understand underlying temporal spatial distribution patterns national scale, changes occupancy through time using 1969–1979 1999–2004 editions Atlas Bird Distribution Specifically, asked (1) whether there have been declines between Atlases, (2) how relate indigenous cover, temperature, urbanisation, type (podocarp beech dominated). remained stable North Island periods but South Island. Across both islands periods, decreased significantly as cover decreased, availability still factor parts Overall, our results support previous studies showing primary for forests, also highlight importance recovery.

Seed dispersal of fleshy-fruited environmental weeds in New Zealand

Fruit-eating animals play a key role in spreading non-native environmental weeds, via seed ingestion and subsequent dispersal. We reviewed available information on dispersal of fleshy-fruited environmental weeds in New Zealand. We found almost a third (32.9%) of 295 environmental weed species in New Zealand have fleshy fruits adapted for internal dispersal by animals. Fruiting phenology differs...

Plant Species Preferences of Birds in Lowland Rimu (dacrydium Cupressinum) Forest—implications for Selective-logging

Plant species preferences of birds were determined by comparing the proportional bird use of plant species during direct observations with the proportions of plant species present on point-height intercepts in lowland rimu (Dacrydium cupressinum) forest in North Okarito, Westland. Plant species and bird use of plant species were divided into 5 m height classes, and rimu trees were divided into ...

Fate of Moreporks (ninox Novaeseelandiae) during a Pest Control Operation on Mokoia Island, Lake Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand

We monitored 16 radio-tagged moreporks (Ninox novaeseelandiae) on Mokoia Island after a brodifacoum poison drop to eradicate mice (Mus musculus), normally included in the owls’ diet. All 16 moreporks were alive after 13 days. One bird was found dead on day 22, and corpses of two radio-tagged birds were located on day 51. The bird found on day 22 contained 0.97 mg kg of brodifacoum in its liver....

Heart transplantation in Fontan patients across Australia and New Zealand.

OBJECTIVE Patients with Fontan physiology may eventually require heart transplantation (HT). We determined the rates and outcomes of HT in a national, population-based multicentre study. METHODS From 1990 to 2015, 1369 patients underwent the Fontan procedure as recorded in the Australia and New Zealand Fontan Registry. We identified those who underwent HT and analysed their outcomes. We compa...
